Post-lab Questions
- Based on your results, what are the approximate pH values for your unknown solutions?
Unknown 1: pH = 7 unknown 2: pH = 4
- Did the unknowns match the standard curve perfectly? If not, how did you come up with an approximate pH?
For unknown 1, the data matched the standard curves very closely so it was easy to extrapolate its pH. Unknown 2 was evenly matched between the standard curves of pH 3 and 5 so it was deduced that its pH was 4.
- Write the chemical reaction for the ionization (dissociation) of water. What is the concentration of H+ in pure water? Whats the pH of pure water? What is the formula used to calculate the pH of water?
2 H2O(l) ↔ (aq) + OH-(aq)
Pure water: [H+] = 10-7 M or pH 7
pH = - log [H+]
- Which solution has a higher [H+]: one with pH 12 or one with pH 3? What do the numbers 12 ad 3 actually signify, in a mathematical sense? Does high pH correlate with high proton concentration? Why or why not?
A solution of pH 3 has a significantly higher concentration of H+ because it is acidic. Mathematically, pH values represent an inverse log of base 10 of the concentration of the H+ (or hydronium, H3O+) ion in the solution. By that definition, high pH inversely correlates with high proton concentration and low pH correlates with increased proton concentration.
