- CAx in Automotive Engineering
- Important notations used in CAx (Abkürzungen)(CAE, MBS, FEM,…)
CAE/D/M (Computer Aided Engineering/Design/Manufacturing), D/VMU (Digital/Virtual Mock Up), FEM (Finite Element Method), MCAE(
1.2. Explain the terms “development process” and “workflow”. Give examples for both.
What is the difference?
Development process is a sequence of certain development steps to reach a certain development goal, whereas the development workflow describes a sequence of certain computeraided development steps under application of certain CAE tools.
Process -> What has to be done
Workflow -> How it has to be done and who is involved
- What’s the definition of a digital mockup? (Difference digital mockup – virtual mockup)
Realistic simulation of complex geometrical vehicle structures or vehicles with purpose of visualization, free space analysis, functional optimization, evaluation and decision making.
Virtual Mock Up (VMU) goes from pure geometrical level higher to physical and logical functions.
- Product life cycles (car) – sequence. Which CAx-methods are used?
Development: DMU CAD/M, CAE, several CAx methods used to consider aspects of entire life cycle
Production planning: DMU, CAD/CAM
Production/Manufacturing: CAM
After sales/service: DMU: reachability, repair mounting
Recycling: DMU: dismounting, material separation
- Name some influencing factors in car development (concept phase)
Procedures: Styling concept, Packaging layout, functional concept, innovative technologies, feasibility (is it possible to build it due to material or due to costs?)
Disciplines: Marketing & Strategy, Styling, Packaging, Calculation & simulation, Design
- Difference between hardware and virtual models (Mathematical, physical, semi-physical)
Hardware: clay for styling, wood for first functional tests, physical mock ups for funcitional optimization, rapid prototyping
Virtual: Functional structure diagrams, geometry models, simulation models (FEM, CFD, MBS), Functional sim. models, production simulation (CNC), Data structure models (PDM)
- Name and describe methods for modelling in computational simulation. There are two different types in general. Give some examples of application.
Physical models: are based on laws of Physics and allow mathematical description of considered processes. The resulting equation usually has to be solved by numerical algorithms. -> physical meaning of parameters, insight of nature of process.
