Abstract:
The purpose of the lab was determine if there was a chemical or physical change with the mixtures of the solids and the liquids. Also to distinguish the difference of clear versus colorless change. There were 6 different mixtures made and out of the six four of them were physical changes. The remaining two were chemical changes.
Purpose/Hypothesis:
The scientific method systematically follows logical and objective process to address questions. It promotes replication and verification of conclusions made by other scientists. Scientists use the scientific method to look for cause and effect relationships. When using the scientific method you make an observation record it and then propose a hypothesis. The purpose of the lab was determine if there was a chemical or physical change with the mixtures of the solids and the liquids. Also to distinguish the difference of clear versus colorless change. If a liquid makes a chemical change then they won’t be able to be separated.
Procedures:
A data table was prepared to record observations made throughout the experiment. A newspaper sheet was torn in half from bottom to top. A hand lens was used to examine the torn edges and observations were written down. The sheet of newspaper was then again torn in half, but this time it was torn perpendicular to the first tear. Again the hand lens was used and the observations were recorded. If there were any differences were made between the tears then they were recorded.
A reaction surface was prepared placing the “Experiment Insert” below a transparent sheet cover. Samples were placed on the sheet and were sufficient to cover a part of black “X” and the white area next to it. Allowing for the samples to cover both spaces allowed for better observation since some samples were better seen on white surfaces instead of black.
A piece of rock salt observed using the hand lens. The observations included the approximate size, shape, color, and texture of the rock salt. The back of a metal spoon was then used to crush the rock of salt. The rock was gently crushed in order to get smaller pieces and not have it completely pulverize. Observations were made after the crushing and if there were any large pieces of salt they were returned to the vial. Several drops of tap water were added to the small pieces of salt and it was observed over the next few minutes.
A small amount of sand was placed over another “X” on the reaction surface insert. The sand was observed with the hand lens. The things that were observed were things such as colors, size, shape, and texture. Any differences that were observed were recorded. Most of the sand was returned to the vial. Several drops of water were added to the remaining amount of sand on the reaction surface insert.
