Suppose that you have a pure substance. How can you tell whether it is a compound or an element?
A pure substance can only be made of one type of element. With that said it cannot be combined with any other element. You can tell if you have a compound or an element but simply knowing wheather something else is combined in the element. Anything made of two or more elements is considered a compound. You can also see if a pure substance is an element or compound by how many times it can be broken down even more. If it cannot be broken down its an element.
What is the difference between an ionic and a covalent bond?
When two or more atoms from a bond that links them togerther with a molecule or compound. These bonds are considered ionic bonds and covalent bonds. Ionic bonds are bond together because they have an attraction with opposite charged ions. Example if you combine Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen you make sugar which is considered an ionic bond.
Covalent bond are not attracted by opposite charges but by shared electrons. When an eletron is shared half and half between the atoms this causes a covalent bond. Covlent electron are pulled towards one atom more then others. A good example the atoms in H2O are together considering them a polar covalent bond.
Why ionic compounds are formed when a metal from the left side of the periodic table reacts with a nonmetal from the right side.
Because the left side only has one valence electron but the right side has 7 so they attract. In other works the metal donates electrons to the non-metal to gain a full outer shell of electrons. It is the electrostatic forces between the oppositely charged ions that is the ionic bond. ionic bonds form between metals and non metals so they are stronger than convalent . also they have charges for example the metals in the first group give one electrons
