After research and discussion, following is a summary of ETSP Assessment teams finding that prevention is a cornerstone to quality health care.
Prevention is much preferable to disease prevention. Who is better equipped devised a prevention strategy than a healthcare organization? The common goal of any disease prevention strategy or plan is to protect patients and other members of the public from actual or potential health threats. Primary prevention entails the prevention of the onset of a given disease by risk reduction. Secondary prevention entails procedures which detect and treat pathological changes thus controlling progression of the disease.
Healthcare organizations do the research to find the causes of disease. Once that cause has been found as in the case of malaria steps can be taken to limit exposure or find a cure or vaccine. An example of this would be, polio vaccine named after Dr. Jonas Salk.
Medical organizations have the expertise and sources to find prevention methods.
The primary purpose of a healthcare facility is to give care to persons in need of medical treatment. Research shows that investing in prevention measures will save millions of lives.
The work and plans of organizations such as the CDC and WHO (World Health Organization) have succeeded in eradicating disease in many areas of the world, making life safer and healthier for each of us.
Locally, as well, it is necessary for health organizations to devise health and education plans to protect people from becoming ill or that illness being spread to others. Keep an individual incident from becoming an outbreak or epidemic.
