Week 2 Assignment: What Has Been The Impact Of Medicare On The Healthcare System?
Medicare ranks among the most important Civil Rights achievement in U.S. history. By threating to deny federal funding from any hospital that practiced racial discrimination, as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, passed in 1964, Medicare forced the desegregation of every hospital in America basically overnight.
Medicare has changed health care in America for the better since being signed into law on July 30, 1965. It has become such a big part of the health care system that it’s hard to imagine the world without it.
Medicare removed the racial segregation practiced by hospitals and other health care facilities, and in many ways they helped deliver better health care. By ensuring access to care, Medicare has contributed to a life expectancy that is five years higher than it was when the law went into effect.
In conclusion, with the passage of Medicare, hospitals quickly integrated. Also at the time Medicare began 19 million Americans enrolled. Today, that number has reached 56 million, or 17% of the population.
