Lab Report Assistant
This document is not meant to be a substitute for a formal laboratory report. The Lab Report Assistant is simply a summary of the experiment’s questions, diagrams if needed, and data tables that should be addressed in a formal lab report. The intent is to facilitate students’ writing of lab reports by providing this information in an editable file which can be sent to an instructor.
Exercise 1: Urinalysis
Data Table 1. Urinalysis: Trial 1. No food or drink at least 2 hours prior to testing.
Time to View Results | Test Results | Indications
Visual Test | Immediately | Yellow lighter | Normal |
Glucose | 1-2 hours | Less than or equal to 130 mg/d | Normal |
Protein | 1-2 days | Less than or equal to 150 mg/d | Normal |
pH | Immediately | 4.5-8 | Normal |
Nitrates | 1-2 hours | Negative | Normal |
Leukocyte Esterase | Immediately | Negative | Normal |
Ketones | 10-30 minutes | None | Normal |
Bilirubin | Immediately | Negative | Normal |
Urobilinogen | Immediately | 0.5-1 mg/dL | Normal |
Blood | Immediately | Less than or equal to 3 RBCs | Normal |
Specific Gravity | Immediately | 1.005-1.025 | Normal |
Data Table 2. Urinalysis: Trial 2. 60 minutes after Distilled Water Ingestion.
Hypothesis | Test Results | Indications
Visual Test | Light or clear | Valid | High water intake |
Glucose | Glucose concentrates should be higher in urine of diabetes mellitus patients and lower in urine of healthy patient | Valid | Diabetes present |
Protein | Protein leaks into urine if kidneys are damaged | Valid | Presence of protein in urine |
pH | Indicator paper should present results | Valid | The paper indicator showed acidosis and alkalosis |
Nitrates | A negative nitrate test does not mean urine is free of bacteria | Invalid | Some bacteria do not produce nitrites. |
Leukocyte Esterase | Elevated urinary leukocyte esterase as a potential surrogate marker for HIV sexual transmitted risks in men receiving antiretroviral therapy | Invalid | Urine tests can be indicators of HIV which can lead to further evaluation and treatment of the inflamed tract. |
Ketones | Starvation or high protein diets causes Ketonuria | Valid | When carbs are not available for the body, it metabolizes fat to receive the energy needed to function. |
Bilirubin | Bilirubin should not be present in the urine of healthy individuals | Valid | Normal |
Urobilinogen | Absence of red blood cells in the sediment will further support the presence of false hematuria | Valid | Dark red urine in the dipstick and sediment negative for blood is due to myoglobin in urine |
Blood | Distilled water is acidity and leads to acidification of the blood (acidosis) | Invalid | Normal |
Specific Gravity | Urine specimens with high specific gravity results are always cloudy | Invalid | Physical characteristics of the urine is the measure of the urine concentration that can be determined using a chemical test |
