American Popular Culture - McDonalds

In American Popular Culture, one of the elements that have been very successful internationally is McDonalds. McDonald’s restaurants can be found in Saudi Arabia; which cover the following regions: Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait.

McDonalds is a very famous and successful chain of restaurants. There are various elements that make this restaurant successful in Saudi Arabia; incorporation to Islamic Traditions and law, different names on their burgers, delivery and the transportation of produce and meat from nearby countries (McDonalds.com, 2011).

In order for McDonalds to be allowed to operate in Saudi Arabia; it has to comply with Islamic traditions. All of their food has to be Halal food. Halal means lawful or permissible in Arabic. The term is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law. Halal foods are foods that Muslims are allowed to eat under Islamic Law. The criteria specify both what foods are allowed, and how the food must be prepared. The foods addressed are mostly types of meat and animal tissue. The meat from animals slaughtered has to be killed in the name of their God Allah. There is an exception under their law if no other food is available in order to survive; they can consume any meat or food (Proquest.com, 2012).

In the United States McDonalds has been famous and popular by the names of their burgers, such as, big mac, double cheese burger. In Saudi Arabia they have created their own names for some of the burgers, such as McRoyale, McArabia. The difference from a McArabia from an American burger is that they use pita bread instead of regular bread. Another factor that makes this restaurant successful is delivery. In the U.S McDonalds does not offer delivery for their burgers; due to the fact that are millions of restaurants within walking or driving distances.
