Hybrid Model of Crisis
This paper will cover the hybrid model of crisis intervention. The paper will also provide specific examples of how each facet of the hybrid model of crisis intervention is illustrated in the video clip “Title 5, Scenario 3 Basic Skills/Hybrid Model: Counselors Talk with Women Losing Custody of Child from the Crisis Intervention in Action DVD”. Lastly, this paper will discuss which listening skills the counselors exhibited in the video.
There are numerous ways to describe the crisis intervention model. Earlier models have depicted crisis intervention as problem exploration, examining safety concerns, looking for support, examining alternatives to present behavior, planning how to restore equilibrium, and gaining commitment to take action. These steps are no longer used to describe the hybrid model because it emphasizes that the model may be linear. A lot of times the crisis intervention model may refer to doing a task several times. Linear plans are easily said but not easily done. Often time people are faced with a multiplicity of problems that are so concrete it makes it difficult and often chaotic to intervene with the main problem. For example, in the video the mother does not feel that it is important to take her daughter to school. Therefore, how could you expect the daughter to feel as though school is important as well. The mother feels that taking her daughter to scholl is not important and does not happen every day. While the daughter is at school she is not attending class and doing other things. The mom wants the child protection service professional to mind her business but she doesn’t want to discipline or show any interest in her child. Recent crisis intervention strategies have been designed to integrate problem solving strategies and are easy to use and adaptable to any crisis that you may come into contact with. Strategies used to describe the crisis intervention hybrid model are predisposition, engaging, initiating contact, problem exploration, defining the crisis, providing support, examining alternatives, planning in order to reestablish control, psychoeducation, obtaining commitment and follow up.
Throughout the video there are examples demonstrated on how each facet of the hybrid model is illustrated. Initial contact was made with Geri and she expressed her dissatisfaction in the school’s counselors calling the child protection services and getting into her business. This is causing Geri to have an unfavorable week with child protection services coming to her home. The counselors in her session are listening attentively and making sure they clarify what issues are being addressed by the school counselors and Geri’s actions. The counselors are exploring Geri’s problems and bring to light the current living arrangements along with her daughter’s school attendance. There are some concerns that a 14-year-old child is not attending school on a daily basis due to her mothers’ negligence. The counselors would like to provide Geri with some support so they question her about her relationship with her child’s father; she let them know that he was not a good candidate for support due to his alcoholism. She does however lean on 14-year-old for reinforcement. She is a good kid and she considers her a responsible individual that takes care of her. The team of counselors offer to assist Geri in writing a letter to the school counselors since Geri took a face-to-face meeting off the table. They work with Geri to make a plan on how to properly address the school counselor since Geri feels threatened by her. Geri’s concern is the counselor’s want to be her daughters’ mother and take her place. Geri’s counselors would like to obtain a commitment from her in order to write an actual letter to the counselor. They promise that they will go over the letter and rephrase it before she turns it into the school so that they can follow up with Geri. The next step is scheduling an evaluation for her daughter.
