Global Perspectives Assessment
Crime is a continually growing phenomenon that isn't confined to any specific region in the world. The growth of corruption is displayed in many ways from transnational activities, cyber-crime, drugs, human trafficking and environmental crimes. Here in America, law enforcement agencies continuously battle corruption in their many forms and their apparent partnerships. Street level crimes are associated with the importation and dissemination of drugs, a rise in fraud can be linked to the growth in commercial transactions.
In this paper I will assess the impact of globalization on America’s criminal justice system, compare international justice systems and consider the different practices in use. I will also assess the effect of cyber-crime and technology on the global justice systems, and the various policing systems globally. Finally, I will identify some major crimes and criminal issues that have had a global impact on the criminal justice system.
Impact of globalization on the U.S. criminal justice system
Since the onset of the 21st century, America has led the global effort to prevent and fight crime. Some significant impact of globalization “is the international dimensions of crime, the impact of legal and illegal immigration, transnational organized crime, technological influences on global criminality, and the influence of a more diversified American culture” (Federal Bureau of investigation). America’s criminal justice system recognized and adapted to the new wave of crimes, and the importance of international cooperation to identify and negate the threats.
The department of justice implemented a new strategy aimed at combatting international organized crime that threatens America’s security and stability. “The Law Enforcement Strategy to Combat International Organized Crime was developed following an International Organized Crime Threat Assessment and will address the demand for a strategic, targeted, and concerted U.S. response to combat the identified threats” (Ward, 2000). This strategy will enable “U.S. federal law enforcement agencies to share information and intelligence, collectively identify and prioritize the most significant threats, and utilize America’s law enforcement’s expertise and resources toward mitigating those threats” (Federal Bureau of investigation).
America’s law enforcement agencies increased their co-operation with their global partners with the goal of bringing international criminals to justice, both locally and internationally. To complement the strategies of the justice department, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies must train and educate personnel at all levels to identify transnational crimes.
An in-depth understanding of world cultures and the different legal systems will put America’s law enforcement in a better position to impact crimes globally. system.
