Depression is a very common disorder and many people experience it at one point in their lives. Sometimes these feeling can interfere with people and their daily lives including being around family, working, or the ability to live a healthy life. When depression comes to this point the person should seek medical attention to try to manage the underlining causes of depression.
Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depressive disorder. This is considered a serious mental illness. “Unipolar disorder is when episodes only involve major depression and no manic or hypomanic episodes.” When someone has bipolar disorder they usually experience very low periods of depression and can sometimes act normal. With some people years of functioning with this disorder can make it so manic episodes are few and far between. With others, some can experience manic episodes up to five times per year. Some doctors think that the cause of depression or bipolar is certain chemical imbalances in the brain. It is believed that some results of depression are a combination of genetics, biochemical, environmental and psychological factors.
There are many symptoms that a person who suffers from bipolar of unipolar disorder experiences. A primary symptom of bipolar disorder is dramatic and unpredictable mood swings. Some people experience these mood swings more than others who are diagnosed with bipolar do. There are also mania symptoms which include “happiness, excitement, irritability, restlessness, increased energy, less need for sleep, racing thoughts, high sex drive, and a tendency to make grand and unattainable plans.” Another symptom of bipolar disorder is depression symptoms; these include “madness, anxiety, irritability, loss of energy, uncontrollable crying, change in appetite causing weight loss or gain, increased need for sleep, difficulty making decisions, and thoughts of death or suicide.” These are serious symptoms that affect people and their ability to live everyday lives. There are also several types of bipolar disorders. The types of bipolar disorders are bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder, mixed bipolar, and rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.
