Making ethical decisions are never an easy thing to do. When making ethical decisions we have to consider all factors involved and actually take time to analyze the whole situation. As a shift leader of a restaurant during my high school years, one day I was faced with a very difficult situation. During my shift we had a rude and outrageous customer come in to dine. It just seemed like we could do nothing to satisfy or meet her expectations. As one of my staff still continued to assist her she was still not happy. Another customer walked up and also needed assistance from the same staff member and the staff helped him out. The angry customer began to make a huge scene and called for me to come over. The customer accused my staff of being racist which is why she was unhappy. I did not know how to handle this situation due to the fact that I knew racism had nothing to do with anything and I wanted to take up for my staff.
I also have to find a way to hear her out and make her dine in better for the remainder of time. In this situation I had to see both sides of the story and find out exactly what took place before making any decisions. The ethic theories I used in this situation was virtue ethics and ethics of care. Virtue of ethics was used when I thought of my staff after knowing the type of people they were and I knew this was not the type of people we were. I used ethics when actually determining how I would handle the situation. Ethical theories are very important to know when making decision in any situation. Especially in a professional setting when the decision you make or how you choose to handle a situation may affect your job, staff or customers. Being able to identify these theories and choose the appropriate one for every situation is important. Ethical theories help us to choose the best approach in making a situation better or even making better decisions.
