Euthanasia
“Euthanasia” or mercy killing, it is one way to end of our life with the help of the doctors. Is it beneficial and necessary for human? Death has commonly known as a sad and unpleasant condition for human. When it occurred to someone’s life, it also took pain, compassion and sympathy to their family and friends. there are people who still believe that they have the right to die, stop their last breath whenever they cannot endure the suffering from illness and help saving time and money for the relatives. However, some people say that we do not know the time of our death, it is the duty of God or natural that human cannot interfere. We cannot judge to die because maybe it is about emotion, carelessness and perversion.
First, the right to die, this phrase shows that people have the right to choose for their life. Whatever they choose, it should be acceptable. As you can see from the law of the developed countries such as Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Canada, some states in USA and etc., the human euthanasia is legal in these countries. It is an effort of the government policies on euthanasia that are based on the idea of the people have the right to live and the people also have the right to die. This idea is especially for patients with a lot of suffering. One of the famous fighter about the right to die is Tony Nicklinson who was a handicap from the stroke in 2005. He fought for his right to die many times with the High Court in UK until he has died after his heartbroken with the decision of the court. Last week before he died, he wrote for BBC “It cannot be acceptable in 21st Century Britain that I am denied the right to take my own life just because I am physically handicapped(1)."
Second, patients suffering, some patients have been in hospitals for a long time. They have to spend their life time with pain. If these terminal patients have to face with long, slow and painful death, it is much kinder to relieve their suffering and allow them to end their life comfortably.
Third, save time and money, for this reasons many patients want to decrease the duty of taking care them for their relatives. If they live longer, their relatives have to spend time and money as much as they can save their patients.
In contrast, this issue has argued by the religious organization for a long time. Especially, In Cristian aspect, they believe that we cannot interfere in the doing of God because God has a purpose to everything. Human is the most wonderful creation of God. So, they insist that all of human’s breath belong to God. God give us life and He will take it back. “Euthanasia is a triumph of selfishness, not compassion” (2) said Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic church.
Another aspect claimed that it is not sure that voluntary patients have agreed to give up their life just out of emotion but they do not mean it in real. Most of patients who were suffered from their illness are sometimes in a confused and disheartened state. They may have hearing their physical problems and illness that are very emotional to them. So, they are just being emotional and misinterpreting to request taking their life. There is an interesting case in Belgium, on 9 June 2016, BBC reported that “A gay man in Belgium is trying to end his life because he cannot accept his sexuality.” (3) He seeks euthanasia to end his sexuality struggle. From this case, we will see that this man has a psychological problem so the psychiatrist in Brussels encourage him to further treatment such as time, medication and psychotherapy. This is an obvious news that shows us about the emotion of human. Maybe they do not want to die, they just refuse themselves.
