Foster the Inclusion and Diversity Values through E-Learning Education

Education institutions are agents of socialization, including in the ideas of inclusion and diversity. Inequality in education and discrimination in school and educational system have been recurrent challenges in Indonesia. To evaluate that, the human rights violent on religious freedom in Indonesia were 194 cases including religious minorities attack in the beginning 11 months of 2015 (Human Rights Watch, 2017). Diversity has multi-dimensional of race, ethnicity, age, gender, culture differences, sexual orientation, religious, disability, and work styles. Problems arise when the values of inclusion and diversity have contaminated with bad culture that influence to future generations. Consequently, the roles of education institutions are crucial to the diversity values development.  On the other hand, the impact of information technology for education is excessive as it supported by high level of digital penetration in Indonesia. However, e-learning education is applicable to educate the ideas of inclusion and diversity as it is collaboration between education system and technology.   In this case, e-learning teaching deals with increasing the understanding of inclusion and diversity through online constructivists learning, accessible online learning portal, and social and contextual support.

 Online constructivists learning create the teaching environment become more conducive. Students will be provided related cases to have an opportunity to explore cultural diversity. Constructivism transforms student’s knowledge by replacing the standard curriculum with problem solving context. The instructor finds the anti-bias materials by giving appropriate information resources. After that, the students assessment is monitored as part of their learning process, where they actively involved in the class discussion and able to evaluate their own work. In addition, it is also makes both teacher and student gain a positive experience with online education.

In order to design e-learning interesting, the conversation and collaboration tools are created more accessible. The contents are making by presentation, video, and e-book for each chapter. Then, the grading system will be more accountable as the students are able to see their progress directly. The assessment includes quiz, survey, and report to the drop box. For the class communication, the instructor provides student discussion forum, their attendance, class lists, and email. Afterwards, the resources are available to check calendar, student’s checklist, e-portfolio, and class progress.
