Jong’s INTRO:
Our team will present the chapter on the Third World revolutions. Our group members are Mazhar, Vasily, Jong, Ana and myself-Kosta.
The Cold War between the USA and the Soviet Union made the Third World the zone of war shaped by the social and political instability. America feared the unity of the Third world with the USSR and by all means tried to prevent it. Russia, although, did not intend starting revolutions, hoped that due to stronger economic position communism will win over capitalism weakened by the end of the Golden economy. Therefore, the Third World became a central inspiration and hope of the global majority who believed in Social Revolution.
The main points of the chapter focus on
(1) The guerilla wars in the Third World
(2) Social movements in the New Industrialized Countries (NICs) and on the West, and
(3) The global significance of such movements, their relation to the end of the Soviet communism and relevance to the modern world.
Melvin’s 1st Argument:
One of the distinct factors of the Third World revolutions were anti-imperialistic guerilla wars promoted by left ideologists who were against the Soviet’s communism politics. At the center of such wars were resistance to inequality and the Right Wing military regimes, protection of interests of working class and peasants and the national liberation.
Generally the rebels were young intellectuals from middle-class, student activists and supporters of social progress known as a “popular front”.
Two reasons exist why the non-communists Third World revolutionists were forced to support rather communists’ position:
- Communism was general ideology of the supporters of social revolution world-wide
- Anti-communism was the politics of Imperialistic America
One of the brightest examples is success of 1959 Cuba Revolution led by Fidel Castro. Two important meanings:
- It inspired the Left and supporters of social revolution on the West.
- The spirit of Cuba’s revolution also spread and encouraged social movements throughout the Latin America that perceived Cuba’s victory as the beginning of the great national liberation.
