The Health and safety at work act 1974 was put in place to ensure that all workers are safe and to prevent industrial accidents, it also means that a risk assessment must be undertaken for all stages of product manufacture; a risk assessment covers all the risks whilst doing a certain activity and identifies how to reduce these risks. The key requirements of employers in order to protect the safety of employees and visitors under this act include:

• Carrying out a risk assessment before opening a business, and it should be updated regularly.

• Ensure that there is a health and safety policy written for the setting and appoint someone to be responsible for health and safety.

• Keep a record of all accidents and incidents.

• Provide safety equipment, written health and safety information and training.

• Ensure the workplace is fully ensured.

Employees also have responsibilities under the act, these include:

• Take reasonable care of your own, and other peoples, health and safety.

• Not doing anything deliberately that could endanger the health and safety of others.

The health and safety at work act ensures that all health and social care settings have procedures and plans in place to prevent, as much as possible, any accidents that may occur. For example, a nursery would have a risk assessment that would include many different risks that may occur such as; children eating small parts of a toy. Under this act, the nursery would have to, in their risk assessment, show that they have taken action in order to prevent this risk from happening.
