1) How do you evaluate Jack Welch’s leadership effectiveness? What criteria do you use? Why? Discuss.

Jack Welch is known as a leader who has established a new and better practices in business by implementing various innovative management strategies. His leadership effectiveness is a phenomenal success in establishing a new culture at a work place. He is setting directions and inspire people to follow them, influence people to achieve goals by creating environment that is inspiring, motivating, ,energising. He involved everyone and created an open collaborative workplace where everyone's opinion is welcome. So that, he has achieved maximum product output by using minimum resources and involving maximum employee. He focused on locating and developing leadership at all levels of the company. GE employees were being developed, evaluated and compensated based on a demanding evaluation process called “Session C ”. He has a open and clear communication, inspiring, forward looking vision. These criterias explains how he is effective in leadership.

2) How do you describe his style according to

a) Behavioral theories?

Team management (Task -High , People- High): People are committed to task and leader is commited to people as well as task.

Team members are motivated and engaged with new ideas; it is the culture that Jack was trying to create in GE.

b) Modern approaches? What are the pros and cons of his style? Support your answer with examples.

He is a Transformational and Transactional Leader if it is described according to modern approaches.

Transformational leadership theory starts from the leader, flows through every individual employee, and ends with an organisational culture. Values of every employee, their ideas and creativity empower in the vision of the future.

Jack is a charismatic leader. He encouraged managers to share their concerns and knowledge and talk about their fears freely. So, they became willing to be part of the change, improvements etc. without resistance. Best Practice Project is an example for this issue. Transformation leadership motivate and empower to achieve company objective by appealing to higher ideas and values.

Transactional leaders motivate followers by setting goals and promising rewards for desired performance. In this case, Jack was set high-stretch performance targets and those who achieved them were rewarded with substantial bonuses or stock options.
