Intervention strategies

When discussing rape with a victim there a few strategies that happened in the video. In this case the victim was not sure if she was raped or not. There were many indicators that made her believe that she was. The first thing is to let the victim know that she was in the right place and assuring her that the counselor was there to help her was the first thing that happened. The next step was to have her tell them what she remembered. In this video she did not pry into the detail but allowed the victim to tell her what she could remember by starting with the man’s name. Then she moved on to “Let’s start with what happened yesterday.” Once she lets her explain what she remembers then she moves on to if she has a support system such as her parents. This is something that is very important. This is a way for her to remind the victim that she does have people that she can lean on. During this time, she has remained calm and keeps a monotone voice all of this allows the victim to know that she is there for her. She lets the victim know that she will also be there for her. Another strategy that she uses is she explains to her what will happen once they do a rape kit. She explains it will be uncomfortable and could possibly be painful. This helps the victim understand what is going to happen so when they do the rape kit she is less stressed. She also encourages her to contact her parents before they go to the hospital. She talks with her about possible filling charges. She was unsure of this so she allows her to have the space to decide on her own what she wants to do. Once she has talked with her about everything that can should happen she then talks with her about getting ahold of her parents. The victim did make a comment about her father taking care of the situation instead of getting the law involved. This is where the counselor disuses the consequences of what could happen letting her know it is better for the police to get involved. Each of the things disused was a strategy to help the victim.
