Introduction
Ever since we put away the horse and wagon over a century ago, oil has moved America. It has sustained us and has driven us economically to become the financial capitol we are today. Overall, it moves us every day whether it is going to work, shopping or just to simply get away on a vacation.
Every American is affected by oil and its by-products today. The most obvious is at the pump when we fill up our cars and trucks with gasoline, but everything from plastics to medicine is thanks to oil.
However, with all the blessings it has given us, we also have some known side effects from oil as well. Pollution is obvious in it's arguments, but what is continuing to become a growing concern is our dependence on oil from an instable Middle East.
With all this said, how do we move away from dependence of foreign oil? How do we lower gas prices for the average consumer? How do we responsibly enter the green age of energy without bankrupting the middle and lower class of America?
This is what we need to do:
Drilling in America
Gaining speed in every corner of America, more and more American's feel that drilling is the quickest and best short-term solution we have to lower gas prices and relieve our reliance on foreign oil.
I happen to agree with the aforementioned majority.
With the current turmoil in the Middle East and with our current demands for oil, we can't be held captive by countries in a region where stability is always in question. We have turned our backs on drilling in our own back yard to appease a small minority of extreme environmentalists who don't speak for all Americans.
Don't get me wrong, going green is good. Green is a healthier, more productive environment for ourselves and our children, but we can't be expected to turn that corner overnight. As a country, we have an insatiable appetite for oil, and right now, we definitely need it from a more reliable source.
When the Democratically controlled House passed the drilling moratorium of 1982, America became its own worst enemy. We didn't foresee our eventual reliance on countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to power America into the 21st century. We didn't see the eventual chokehold that OPEC would have on the world's leading economic engine. The current events in Egypt, Lybia and Bachrain just add more proof to why we need to drill here.
Drilling in America now would ease our pain. It would create jobs here in the United States by exploiting new drilling technics where fewer derricks are needed to unearth the oil we need from the ground. Plus, our supply would be our own.
We currently import up to 60% of our oil from overseas markets. That's $20 billion dollars sent
