Martha Rinaldi: Should She Stay or Should She Go?
Introduction
Martha Rinaldi joined Potomac Waters as Assistant Product Manager after graduating from a reputed Business School. She preferred this job over Deep Dive Pizza, where she interned during her MBA program. Although being highly successful at Deep Dive Pizza and catching the eyes of the higher management she felt that she would be better trained at Potomac Waters in the field of Marketing.
Potomac Waters: was a beverage company with a nationwide presence in 3 major divisions, Sports Drinks, Health Drinks and Carbonated Soft Drinks. Marketing played a central role in the growth of the company. A job in marketing in Potomac Waters was fast paced and demanding due to the nature of the Beverage Industry and the competition. Potomac Waters was reputed as a company which groomed and trained newly hired employees very well.
Martha Rinaldi had to face the following challenges in pursuit of her goals
1. Natalie Follet, Product Manager, was not on good terms with Martha Rinaldi and this hampered the latter’s personal growth and training.
2. Jamie Vaughan, Associate Product Manager, was a hard man to cope with and was not open to communication. He was also one of the closest persons to Natalie Follet which made his position for Martha Rinaldi even more important.
3. Martha had problems in identifying and understanding the norms of the company which was evident again and again from different incidents that happened during the time she was employed there.
Due to the above mentioned reasons Martha Rinaldi is currently assessing whether to stay at her current job or to switch another job.
Statement of Problems
The biggest problem Martha faced was little to no communication with her Boss Natalie Follet. Major problems for Martha Rinaldi are as follows
1. She did not understand how to deal with her boss. This was evident from different encounters she had with her boss.
2. She had difficulty in understanding the norms of Potomac Waters. She was still carrying the same perceptions and attitudes she grew accustomed to in Deep Dive Pizza.
3. She was a low self-monitor and did not understand what other people expected her to do.
4. Her motivational needs according to Herzberg theory of Motivation were not satisfied in this organization.
Causes of Problems
Martha Rinaldi had virtually no communication with her boss Natalie Follet. As the reading “Managing your Boss”, by Linda A Hill and Kent Lineback, suggests due to this she had not received any kind of direction and goal orientation
