Introduction

Effective communication is crucial these days in the healthcare industry. Communicating includes verbal, non-vernal, formal, informal and written. The sender, receiver, message and feedback are the main components used in communication process. It is imperative these days to use effective communication in order to build a good rapport with the ones using those services. When communication is not effective then it becomes difficult for the one seeking those services The communication barriers that cause communication to not be effective include, jargons, acronyms, misinterpretation, etc.

Overview of the Organization and Case Study

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is the one of the top ten hospitals in the United States. Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in Southwestern Pennsylvania that is dedicated to the care of infants, children and even young adults. The hospital is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children through research, teaching and the use of patient care.  

Identify and Describe the Situation or Problem

Knowledge

The cardiology department was a very fast paced department, the department consisted of 14 physicians, and 17 staff members. The main problem in this case is the lack of communication between physicians and management to the staff. The minor problem is the disorganization in the department as a whole. Communication is a two-way process, so improving communication involves how we send and receive messages.( Harris & Nelson, 2008)  As a result, this lead to the Cardiology department having a high turnover rate.

Sensitivity

The ones who are primarily responsible are the department director, division chief, and management. The shared realities are all of the employees in the department, because they all help put patients and families first. Communication as a staff group is more effective than the communication between management and staff. Poor communication between physician and staff can be difficult when having to work with others. When an employee doesn’t receive the appropriate information to share with the patient, misunderstandings occur and patients become upset.

Skills

Listening to the words being spoken is important, but as a group learning to how the words are being spoken and the nonverbal messages sent. In order to develop these skills, trying to view situations and their responses from the other person perspective. Interpersonal skills in the workplace impact everyone in the organization. Cooperating with others and sharing vital pieces to everyone as a group is important or rumors start. Coopering improves communication and it leads to a better understanding of the situation.
