Executive Summary
Royal University has an excellent and long-standing reputation as one of the best universities in Canada; however the increasingly competitive environment among Canadian Law Schools is currently threatening its position at the leading edge of legal education. As a result, they are seeking an effective solution to maintain their coveted position. In addition to the increasing competition, the collapse of the student articling system and bleak job market has raised ethical concerns surrounding Canadian Law Schools’ policies and practices. After analyzing the current situation from both internal and external perspectives, three alternatives were identified as possible strategic solutions for Royal University to consider:
Alternative 1 | Increase Tuition |
Alternative 2 | Increase Class Sizes |
Alternative 3 | Implement Integrated Law Practice Program |
These alternatives were weighed against the criteria of pillar standards, societal concerns, financial impact, and ethical decision tests to determine the best possible solution moving forward.
It is recommended that Royal University’s Faulty of Law implement Alternative 3: Integrated Law Practice Program. This alternative is based on a Virtuous Corporation approach and satisfies all four established criteria. Implementing a new integrated law practice program will allow Royal University to maintain its position at the leading edge of education while adhering to ethical standards. A three-phase strategy has been developed to ensure successful implementation.
