Should there be Limits on Artistic Freedom?
Artistic freedom is the extent of freedom of an artist to produce art to his/her own insight. Art is a matter of personal taste as such what art is to one person might not be art to someone else. Artistic freedom is threatened when art is challenged because of its content, message or viewpoint, rather than because of its appealing qualities or artistic merit.
Personally, I feel that artistic freedom is vital to both the cultural and political health of our society; hence taking away their freedom would be denying them the right to communicate their feelings and express themselves more creatively. Mostly artists like painters, sculptors and writers who paint and sculpt humans in the nude form and write novels articles on intimate episodes should not be questioned by society, as they just want to express their views about the world we live in, our values and beliefs as a society.
Today, across the cultural spectrum, artistic freedom is under assault. Free expression in popular music, photography, painting, cinema and other arts is threatened by pressure from society. Artistic freedom and its expression cannot be violated. A painting can’t be taken off the wall nor can an artist be put behind bars for his artistic expression, interference with freedom of arts becomes an attack on the life of a society, it kills the right of creative expression by an individual or not suffocating an artist’s right to create. We could choose whether we want to see or buy a painting by M.F. Husain, who has been systematically harassed by the so-called cultural police. If a certain style or subject of art offends people, they should not look at it.
