When I was learning how to conduct surveys in this class, it seemed very hard and I didn’t think I would be able to do something like that. After the survey was done, I felt like it wasn’t as hard as it had seemed; but it required a lot of technique in order to get the results from people.
It was an incredible experience to talk to strangers on the street. In the beginning, It felt really difficult to approach people because it was my first time doing an activity like this. I also found it very difficult to go through the entire survey. A couple times during the survey people felt bored and impatient after a while. I was surprised that there were actually people who were willing to let me use a couple minutes of their time to do the survey.
When I was conducting the survey on friday morning at the 14th street local bus stop, I was refused several times because the people I asked only spoke Spanish. So I think if we can add a spanish version we can improve the amount of responses we get.
Later in the afternoon at the 23rd street stop, there were many people that were sick or injured. When I asked them to participate; they rejected me because they were not in the mood or condition for talking.
Through this experience, I learned to improve my knowledge about how to talk to people. I didn’t really understand some of the concepts the professor was trying to explain in class, but after I was done with the survey, I gained a deeper understanding of this whole process. Also I have more respect for researchers. It is not an easy job to stand on the street and talk to strangers.
