The Amish Way of Life

The Amish way of life has many interesting concepts and unique beliefs that set them apart from any other culture. While some may see the Amish way of life different than ours, but there simplistic way of life and there family values and beliefs make them one of the strongest sects in today’s society.

The Amish began as a small group of reform minded Mennonites. The Amish movement was founded in Europe by Jacob Amman, from whom their name is derived. In many ways, it started as a reform group within the Mennonite movement, an attempt to restore some of the early practices of the Mennonites. Their population, including adults and children totals approximately 261,150. Their unique practices make them one of America’s most interesting and colorful religious subcultures (BBC Religion 2012). The Amish are the people you will see with beards and suits. The men follow the laws of the Hebrew Scriptures with regards to beards. They do not grow mustaches, because of the long association of mustaches with the military. As for their dress code you will find men in plain, dark colored suits. As women wear a plain colored dress with long sleeves, bonnet and an apron(LancasterPA.com 1995-2011). To this time, the Amish live in 28 states of the United States.

The Amish believe that it's essential to keep them separate from the world, so they live in their own small communities and differ from other Americans in their dress, language, work, travel and education. They do things in other ways that we might do them.

The language of the Amish is different from others they have three different types of it. A German dialect called Pennsylvania Dutch at home, High German for worship and English with outsiders, which are people that are not of Amish culture.

The Amish are people like us and they do things in their own ways. Amish believe that the community is at the heart of their life and faith and the way to live is to live in loving and united community apart from the other religions. All are united and people to them self is not allowed. Everyone in the religion is a member. All the members work as one and help each other when one is in trouble. The Amish are groups that don’t depend on other s for anything and they make their own rules and have their own ways of being. The Amish are very independent as a group and live by their own sets of laws or rules. They are able to make them reasonable and are able to be kept and not broken.

Some modern items that we might think that are very convenient are not convenient for them. They do tend to avoid many things because damaging the community that they live in. Some of the items they tend to avoid are cars, electricity and telephones. We can’t live without these items but as you can see others do function without it.

The Amish do not use violence and bad words. They tend to work it out as calm as can be. They do not depend on the law for their issues.
