[pic 1]To a woman, marriage is not the most important part of life, but, financial independence is!

housands of women are killed, every year, mercilessly in the name of “honor killing”, likewise, thousands are burnt for dowry, and these are the few cases that are brought to our knowledge. However, the majority of the cases are so that we are oblivious of, even, the subjugated victim herself! Cases like these are not the real crimes and, therefore no one pays heed to them. Nevertheless, since long, it has been eating up our society and the status of women in many parts of the world.

That curse is financial dependence of women in our society, the curse that no one talks about, the curse that few deem as a blessing, the curse that has been deteriorating women’s status poorly. This maybe believed as an agonistic idea by some, however, this has been oppressing women in some way or other.

No doubt, times are changing, parents are educating their daughters. But the question arises WHY? Typically, society defines the reason for educating a girl to raise her children in a good manner or to help her husband when times get tougher. These societal definitions give birth to a lot of thought provoking agonies in my mind. Until when are women going to live according to afflicting societal definitions made by our severely patriarchal society? The society which has made women molded in a way that being dependent on someone feels routine to them. The society that has made them forget that happiness lies in independence; be it independence of speech or thoughts or financial independence!

Moreover, women are pushed into marriages soon after they have acquired education enough to raise her children graciously. Their career is put to death in the name of divine relationship. How is it divine if it is forced and done half heartedly? Majority of women are asked to abandon their career, even education, because marriage is the precedence, to speak the truth, marriage is not the most important part of life but financial independence is. The financial dependence of women plays the reason for their silence, their helplessness, their oppression, by and large. If there were no women financially dependent on men, there would have not been helplessness, as a minimum.
