Since the early 1900’s, American’s have debated over the issue of appropriate alcohol use and the effects of alcohol on our nation’s youth. For some, restrictions on alcohol consumption are seen as an infringement on their human rights. For others, alcohol is a satanic liquid that should not be consumed by people of any age. Despite all of the uncertainties that exist on the subject, what does appear clear is that young people will continue to experiment with alcohol no matter what the legal drinking age might be. This position is supported by a U.S. Center for Disease Control report which states, “Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs, and is responsible for more than 4,700 annual deaths among underage youth”. No matter what the ultimate solution to this problem might be, it is irresponsible and unwise for anyone to take a position on such an important subject without first understanding the history, consequences, and potential solutions associated with the issue. The first and most important step in addressing the social issue of underage drinking is to provide all Americans with the knowledge necessary to develop an educated and meaningful position on the subject. is that young people will continue to experiment with alcohol no matter what the legal drinking age might be.
