AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT
PREFACE: The Research Question
Project management can be defined as a set of tools, skills, techniques, and knowledge that can be applied to a project in order to fulfil that project’s requirements. (PMI, PMBOK Guide, 2004)
Agile project management has risen as a popular methodology for software development and continues to dominate the media, both scholarly and nonacademic, in an ongoing debate which compares its benefits to traditional sequential development methodology. The purpose of this essay is to propose an answer to the research question, What is the value of Agile project management for software development in a business context? The answer will be based on a broad literature review, critical analysis of emerging themes, as well as content of a guest lecturer and personal experience of the author in the proper historical context. During this discussion, other interesting themes, such as the viability of Agile-hybrid project management and SCRUM management, may emerge. Due to the scope of this essay, exploration into these themes is not possible, thus inviting future research.
