Approaches to Creating Effective Backup and Recovery

In important systems loss of files due to system crashes can be detrimental to organizations. To avoid this one needs to consider many factors. System crashes can occur any time in both hardware systems but also withing software running inside the hardware. What is the best way of dealing with this? To create backups that are effective and but most importantly to create a recovery plan that is executable.

How do system crashes occur? Physical hard drive can fail which is results in the crash of the system. Some companies specialize in recovering data out of such systems. For example magnetic image of a hard drive can be retrieved even if there is physical damage to a hard drive which is then using the magnetic resonance technology be dumped to another storage devices where the contents are put together in an organized fashion.

Checkpoint dumps are critical in implementing file systems and this would not necessarily work in Unix operating system. This is why it’s important to do incremental and deferential backup s but if the amount of data to recover is in large quantities there will be several ways of taking this dump to ensure that backups can be recovered. Scrambling of the system during a dump is a common way to safeguard the data but without the encryption key it is not possible to decrypt the data when retrieved after the hard drive crash.

Data left in inconsistent states is a system dependent phenomena which can be repaired with a vi editor but vi editor has proven to be a lot harder to master of the Emacs editor. There is a hexadecimal viewer that can easily identify the block of the data which are inconsistent. Swaps can be made atomic to ensure that audit trail is not going to collect information priory existing.

In conclusion, local area networks are become a great way to internally distribute
