1. Introduction of CLP Holdings Limited

CLP is a company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the holding company for the CLP Group, one of the largest investor-owned power businesses in Asia Pacific. It operates a vertically integrated electricity supply business providing a highly reliable supply of electricity to 80% of Hong Kong’s population. Its investments diversified portfolio of generating assets uses a wide range of fuels including coal, gas, and nuclear and renewable sources^[1].

2. Mr. Andre Blumberg’s Talk

From Mr. Andre Blumberg’s sharing talk, the majority adoptions of world energy sources nowadays are from coal, oil and gas^[2]. Disruptive energy technologies to form the basis for future energy system include renewable power generation (solar, wind), smart-grid & energy storages, bridging technologies and COS extraction and efficient energy end use. CLP has proposed various smart services to make Hong Kong a smart city.

A. Smart Grid and Energy

Smart grid and smart energy are the two major services. More customers are to be equipped with smart meters for connection to be smart grid. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a core component of the smart grid & comprises of smart meters & communication technologies, which facilitates two-way communication between customers & the power utility. In 2014, CLP has completed their smart metering plot after running for 18 months cross representation of Hong Kong with 3000 residential customers resulting in up to 20% reduction in critical peak demand. AMI could provide new services, change consumption behavior, and improve safety & reliability. Meanwhile CLP also provide free service on renewable assessment, and design & installation support for solar energy.

B. Smart Home

Eco Power 360 projects from CLP can help customers save energy and save money with smart control and appliances detection. Customer can access and control A/C from smartphone, analyze electric current to break down usage to appliance level, detect & alert appliance issues to avoid equipment loss and costly repairs and provide actionable advice, and help track progress against goals.

C. Open Data & Analytics

Open Data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish without restrictions. It could power smart city revolution with public information and insights for Smart City and Smart Living from data.gov.hk. For example, electric vehicle charging station API can provide location data (including GPS data, address, etc) of electric vehicle charging stations in Hong Kong. Other ongoing analytics projects are wind turbine analytics.
