The purpose of this white paper is to compare three planned information technology projects and evaluate them on the significance and importance to the company’s strategies. The projects will be defined along and their major functions or benefits to provide a justification for the evaluation scores they garner.
Evaluation Criteria
Each lead program manager will be tasked to evaluate the submitted projects and a roll-up summation will be provided below in this document. The individually submitted evaluations will be maintained on file but will not accompany this summary.
Scoring system
Each evaluation criteria will be graded on a simple scale of 0 to 10, allowing the evaluators to place higher scores on factors of importance and 0 on any factor that is not applicable or not relevant. Costs will be measured in dollars. The assessment of importance will be a judgement call be each of the project managers, while cost estimates will be based on the bid /RFP documents produced during the initial solicitation phase of each project. The importance assessments will be averaged and provided as an overall project score. For the purpose of this paper, there will be three senior project managers providing input to this prioritization, therefore, all scores will be the average of the three inputs.
Projects
Project 1 Create a new eCommerce Website for the company
Background: The current corporate website was not designed to be an eCommerce site, but rather was developed to be an informative site about the company. The site was designed to provide our customers a comprehensive overview of our products and to provide them information on local retailers from which they could purchase from. The original site was also intended to be a feedback mechanism for our customers. The proposed site would continue to provide the same services as before, but will be a completely redesigned site that provides easier navigation and search functionality as well as serving as an eCommerce site allowing customers to order directly from us. Additional functionality will be added to provide better images and exploration of our products and will also feature a customer rating and comment board for each product offered.
Requirement:
Graded Criteria | Score | Cost Category | Estimated Costs |
Creates revenue? | 7 | Estimated revenue per year | $1.8M (+) |
Cuts cost of doing business? | 5 | Estimated savings per year | $1.0M(+) |
Regulatory mandates? | 0 | Cost to implement: | $150K(-) |
Competitor’s similar project | 5 | Estimated success: | $1.0M (not graded) |
TOTAL SCORE | 17 | $2.65M |
Benefit: Providing an outlet for consumers to purchase directly from the manufacturer allows the company to capture sales from people who cannot find our products locally and also allows us to showcase our products by new means. The online catalog of our products will provide for a photo gallery of numerous images of each of our products and also allow for a video demonstration of the products in action.
