Green Computing and its Peculiarities
Green computing is the environmentally responsible and eco-friendly use of computers and their resources. In broader terms, it is also defined as the study of designing, manufacturing/engineering, using and disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their environmental impact (Smith).
All modern businesses concern the sustainability in their activities. One of the main factors of the business sustainability is environmental one that is related to the eco-friendly use of technologies and variety of devices, since they provide the most important threat for environment. Speaking of the IT, it cannot provide substantial threat to the environment, however, many companies prefer to use the idea of green computing for their business operations to promote sustainability (Smith).
The main feature of the green-computing is related to the reduction of energy consumption of computers and related devices, furthermore, they try to avoid use of dangerous materials, which can damage environment and increase the amount of resources, which are spent on the recyclability of such devices. The main program that is working on this problem is Energy Star. They claim that application of Energy Star products can help to maintain complete green-computing that will help to decrease the effect on the environment. Among the main recommendations to the modern use of technologies and their production one should emphasize the following:
- Green use – application of only energy-effective devices and rational application of computer resources;
- Green disposal – it relates to disposal of the dangerous materials and repurposing existing outdated computers to produce the new ones, instead of polluting environment with their details;
- Green design – it refers mostly to manufacturers of computers, since they should produce energy-effective designs, which will decrease the overall impact of computers on the environment;
- Green manufacturing – is associated with minimizing of harmful production procedures, which produce waste and damage the environment.
Generally application of green computing can help to save the environment, however, can be more expensive than the usual ones and green computing can be completely disadvantageous, thus, most companies proceed with usual computers, instead of using green-computing, since it is still not ready to be available for all customers.
