- An icon is the smallest object in a GUI system.
- It is the pictorial (graphical) representation of
- a file
- a folder
- an application software or
- a shortcut to any of the above
- To activate a program / file / folder, you double click (two clicks in quick succession) on that icon.
- By right clicking on an Icon we see the Shortcut Menu with some common options.
- It's possible to create your own Windows desktop icons, called SHORTCUT ICONS, for programs, files, folders, etc. You can observe symbol on the icon. See some examples:[pic 3][pic 4][pic 5][pic 6][pic 7]

- A window is a frame like object which shows
- the contents of a file
- the contents of a folder

System Menu
- It is also called as Control Menu.[pic 13]
- It contains the options which control the window size, movement, and state.

The various ways to access System / Control Menu are: -
- Click on the Window Icon at the topmost left corner on the Title Bar of any window[pic 17]
- Press ALT + SPACEBAR in any window
- Menu
- A menu is a list of commands or options.
- Most menus are located on the Menu Bar, which is the toolbar at the top of a Window.
- In MS Windows, all the commands are categorized and placed in various menus.
e. g.: FILE menu EDIT menu
VIEW menu FORMAT menu
WINDOW menu HELP menu, etc

Points to ponder about Menus
- The menu bar is highlighted using the keys ALT or F10.[pic 22]

- Now use LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to move the control to other menus on
the menu bar.[pic 24]
Use UP and DOWN arrow keys to navigate in the menu through the options.
- To come back to work area, press ESC key TWICE.[pic 25]
- To open a menu directly, using ALT key: -
- Hold ALT key and press the underlined letter key in the menu name[pic 26][pic 27]

EDIT menu ALT + E
FORMAT menu ALT + O
