Introduction
Perodua, acronym of Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Berhad (in English, Second Automobile Manufacturer Limited Corporation) is Malaysia's second automobile manufacturer after Proton. Perodua was established in the year of 1992 and the first car, also known as Perodua Kancil was launched on August 1994. The joint venture partners/shareholders of Perodua and their respective shareholding are UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd (38%), Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd. (20%), MBM Resources Berhad (20%), PNB Equity Resources Corporation Sdn Bhd (10%), Mitsui & Co. Ltd (7%) and Daihatsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (5%).
Perodua exports their cars to UK, Singapore, Mauritius, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Fiji. However, Perodua does not compete with Proton for the same market due to the fact that cars launched by Perodua are small-compact cars.
Perodua does not design or engineer the components of the products because all the Perodua cars are badge engineered by Daihatsu. As a result, Daihatsu owns a majority stake in Perodua and in turn is itself now a subsidiary of Toyota Corp.
The coporate logo of Perodua has fluid and dynamic design which represents excellent quality and reliability. The green colour shows social responsibilities to the environment and the community, while the red colour symbolises the development of competent workforce and resilience in meeting challenges in the globalised world.
