Abstract
Over the past 30 years, computers have gone from room-sized behemoths used for advanced calculations, to powerful devices that fit inside a coat pocket. Though once relegated to universities and large corporations, today the desktop computer has become standard equipment in almost every home and office (Yung, 2015). The future of business, in particular, will evolve dramatically as technology becomes even more portable and powerful. These kinds of technological advances – in particular, developments in connectivity – mean that remote working is becoming increasingly relevant to the modern enterprise (Ting, 2011, p. 17). This paper examines Paul Yung’s article, “Are Thin Clients the Future?” in relation to research papers and technology articles to suggest that smartphones and tablets will gradually displace desktops to become the business technology of choice for many industries for business processes in the future (Yung, 2015). The results from the research show that there is a lot of optimism towards the enhanced future role of smartphones and tablets in the business environment of the future, however, issues surrounding data security were discovered which led to a conclusion that the expansion of smartphones and tablets will be slower than anticipated.
