Riordan Needs Analysis

"Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturer employing 550 people with

projected annual earnings of $46 million. The company is owned by Riordan Industries, a

Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion" (Riordan, 2012). The Operations

Department is in charge of the Pyramid Bottle Plan. The plan consist of the Blueprints of the

bottle, graphics/design, and capping of the bottle. "It's products include plastic beverage

containers produced at its plant in Albany, Georgia, custom plastic parts produced at its plant in

Pontiac, Michigan, and plastic fan parts produced at its facilities in Hangzhou, China" (Riordan, 2012).

The issue the Operations Department currently has is outdated procedures that need to be

improved. Most of the production is done manually, inventory management, and the shipping

process is slowing down warehouse and distribution. This cost Riordan time and money. More

warehouse employees are need for data entry in the system. The labor cost is up because of

the need for more employees to do redundant manual work, like old school warehouses. The use

of manpower is not effectively being used because of poor management. The reason being is the

managers have to deal with comparing shipping documents to schedule orders and logging

inventory received. The issue with the current procedures that is in place is slow operation,

the improper use of manpower, and damaged to the inventory as it is being processed.

The solution to Riordan Manufacturing issues is that they should they should put into place in automated system for inventory and manufacturing the products. On each product should be a bar code sticker. The Integrated Barcoding Systems could help the operations department scan the materials, so the information can be put into the inventory system more rapidly. The benefit to changing this system is the ability to track the inventory movement, decrease the cost of labor, accelerate manufacturing process, and lastly increase accuracy and efficiency.
