Trend of Holographic Technology

Introduction

Holography is the science and practice of making holograms. Typically, a hologram is a photographic recording of a light field, rather than of an image formed by a lens. It is used to display a fully three-dimensional image of the holograph subject, which is seen without the aid of special glasses or other intermediate optics. Although holography has been studied for the past 70 years, it has not been commercialized or utilized in product development until very recently. Now, some big companies are publishing some conceptual products. This essay will focus on how holography technique will affect the individual, society and business spheres. Some progression will occur with integrating holographic techniques and products. These related products could subsequently be manufactured for the mass consumer market.

Business

The use of holography, especially in smartphones can disrupt the whole smartphone industry. Unlike the normal smartphone technology, a holographic mobile phone is a kind of innovative handheld terminal. A holographic mobile phone can be seen from all angles on the screen. In combination with air interactive features, it is a revolutionary experience, both visual and tactile.

Short term

Through analysis of the Iphone in the past five years, from Iphone4 to Iphone6S, it is apparent that the smartphone interface has not significantly improved. There are incremental price increases relating mainly to storage capabilities but a more streamlined approach to design. It appears that the size of the smartphone is getting less-consumer friendly. Technology helps people in their daily life for productivity. Scientists are trying hard to make things smaller and more functional. Apple’s strategy seems to go the wrong way; it is not convenient for people to carry such large phones.

Although the chip and technology development are still in its infancy, the purpose of the first chip is to project a 2D image. The 3D image will still need to take longer time to develop. This will not influence the sales of Apple in the next five years, but will have a major impact on their business model in the next decade. Businesses that are putting funds into research and development of this technology will benefit greatly once the product is developed and put into operation within 5 years. The technology will mature and be available for mass production.

Long Term

In the next ten years I believe that holographic technology will impact advertising in the smartphone industry. Currently, the lack of screen real estate on smartphones has held back businesses by not utilizing the power of screen advertising to its full potential. Arguably, the tablet was developed to counteract this problem by enlarging the screen size and helping advertisers achieve their goals. But in terms of a pocket device, smartphones are becoming less useful to advertisers. A holographic display would help advertisers achieve their goals more rapidly. It would enlarge screen real estate, whilst giving businesses an avenue to communicate to consumers more intimately. Having a 3D advertisement provides a different perspective to the consumer. An advertisement could be viewed from different viewing angles and help consumers engage with the material in a more visually spectacular and dynamic way than static 2D advertising.
