Discovery Speech

Gran Torino/The tempest

Main Idea- Discoveries force individuals to leave their comfort zones and sacrifice the old for the new in order to grow spiritually or intellectually.

Gran Torino-

1.Walt starts off as a racist old man and through his hatred he is closed off to discovery.

This can be shown through the first scenes where he is not open to finding out about his neighbours. And is not open to discovery.

Clint Eastwoods Gran Torino examines the cultural and spiritual rediscoveries of a war veteran who was suppressed of emotions due to the violence that he had enforced and witnessed.

2. He discovers Thao and a new found relationship and outlook on life.

In the film the widower war veteran Walt who reluctantly finds a friend and son in Thao – A repentant Vietnamese living next door. Walt is shown at first to be alienated via mis-en-scenes, where his placement on the screen is always de-centered; indicating his physical distance from his family.

When Walt befriends Thao and his family however; his position is centered; conveying harmony. His newfound belonging is evident in his ironic racist slang”I’ve got more in common with these goddamned gooks than my own spoiled-rotten family.” Juxtaposing his uncaring family against the firm bonds of Thao’s family. This transition is also conveyed through edited close-ups of Walt and Thao. Initially Thao and Walt are rarely shown in the same shot, but as they build their relationship, wide- shots are used to show the two as one. This clearly conveys that although you might not have an affinity to someone at first you may need or want a connection to that person soon later.

3. He understands the consequences of his past actions and is finally at peace with them which Is shown in the last scene.

Walt must rediscover his humility and progress from his sheltered world of violence, spiritually transforming him in search of a peaceful resolution. Depicted by a Christ-like mis-en-scene, a slow motion shot and combined with soft non-diegetic music, Walt is portrayed at peace as he falls, which is reflective of his spiritual transformation. The war medal he clutches in his hand serves as a symbol for the repentance of violence he had committed as well as the restoration of the honour he had lost long ago, emphasising the need for self-discoveries. Therefore, both The Tempest and Gran Torino depict the restoration of humanity through the mutual rediscovery of compassion.
