The book I choose for business and professional speaking was Communicating for Future Business Professionals by Michael Greene and Jonathan G. Ripley. The book was written and designed with several purposes in mind. The book should function as a career planning tool and a desktop reference. They wanted to produce a book that would help young people heading into the professional world by showing them techniques that would help them gain employment, and they wanted to supply young professionals with a practical guide to accomplishing a wide variety or writing and speaking tasks that they will encounter in the workplace. This book provides step by step, detailed instructions for producing well designed business documents, preparing effective presentations, and participating productively in a number of business settings. The book Communicating for Future Business Professionals provides practical advice and answers for people who need to communicate in writing at a meeting, or in front of a group. The readers can work through the chapters, they will encounter a variety of tasks in the order they will likely experience them as they move from school into the workplace.
One of the features of the book was Communicating for Future Business Professionals includes the document design process, a set of general procedures for designing business communications. The book covers communications whether it’s in spoken words in face to face situation or written words faxed to fax across cities and continents. Whatever the communication situation, readers can use the document design process to help them create clear and direct messages. The exercises in this book deal with a variety of business situations, so that a context is provided for communication. They expect people that read with book will become familiar with a good deal of business vocabulary and that they are aware of common roles, tasks, and functions in a typical business organization.
There were many take aways that I got from the book Communicating for Future Business Professionals. Using Visual aids such as Microsoft Power Point also is a definite skill and advantage in a business presentation. Charts for statistics help both the communicator and receiver in a business presentation. They help the communicator by having the statistics right there in front of them as to not make a mistake presenting them. It also provides a visual aid for the receiver to not only hear but also see the statistics, or other information that is being portrayed. All of your skills have no effect if you don’t have the knowledge of what you are talking about. Knowledge of your subject is just as important, if not more important. Business presentations need to have understandable facts to enable the communicator to get their point across. Examples of gathering information situations are interviews, questions, and research.
