P1 EXPLAIN POTENTIAL HAZARDS AND THE HARM THAT MAY ARISE FROM EACH IN A HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE SETTING
SETTING: CARE HOME
Physical environment: If is a crowded situation the harm could be the cause of injuries.
Equipment: A wheelchair blocking the passage could cause injury.
Infection: If a room is overcrowded infections can easily spread out due to living status.
Substance: if there are too many medications in one place they can get messed up, the harm could be a patient taking the wrong medication.
Working conditions: poor lightning could lead to injury if a patient is not able to see what he’s doing he could injure himself for example by tripping over a chair.
Working practice: no ppi could be unsafe working practice.
Security system: structures and procedures made for visitors, if a care home doesn’t have these procedures an impostor could easily get in.
SETTING: HOSPITAL
Physical environment: if there is a lack of space in a room the harm could be that people wouldn’t be able to escape in case of emergency.
Equipment: unsupervised equipment in an hospital could cause injury to patients and workers.
Infection: if there isn’t a barrier to prevent an infection the harm is that it could easily spread out and infect others.
Substance: a substance without label is dangerous in a hospital as it could be a poison. This could me harmful for the patient as they can get the substance thinking it was theirs.
Working conditions: if a space is overcrowded it can lead to ineffective communication. This could be harmful for the patient as communication is important between people, if two people can communicate between each other it would be hard for them to cure a patient.
Working practice: if a waste bin bag is left in a non-appropriate space it could spread out germs; this situation may affect patients that are already sick.
Security system: if no one is controlling the fire exit, any person could walk in and out of the building. This is dangerous of all people in the area as the person that may walk in might have bad intentions towards other people.
SETTING: DOCTOR SURGERY
Physical environment: spacious and well lay out; this is important during surgery as it’s a delicate situation, if the surgery is overcrowded it could cause mistakes.
Equipment: sterilized equipment, this is important, so the patient won’t be infected with germs.
Infection: sharp boxes.
Substance: If urine samples are being left out there is the danger that they’ll spill out on other patients
Working conditions: well lighted environment and sterile environment during the surgery.
If the environment is not well lighted the doctors might not be able to see what they are doing.
Working practice: professional person that knows what he’s doing.
If the doctor doesn’t know what is doing it could injure the patient this could be very dangerous.
