Food waste is a global problem of breathtaking scope. The entire production-consumption cycle is wasteful, a distortion of needs and wants. It overproduces and we under-consume - that‟s the genesis of food waste at each level. Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial agricultural production down to final household consumption.
According to United Nation‟s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 1.3 billion tons of food wasted every year globally is enough to feed 500 million people without any extra burden on natural resources. According to another report by a global research firm, the Indian pet care market is estimated to reach `800 crore by 2015 from `368 crore in 2011. The size of the Indian pet food market is estimated to be approximately 6,000 tons by consumption and is growing annually at 10-15 percent.
Based on the proposition above, it is high time that we wage a war against food wastage and channelize the potential latent within it in some other form as it is one of the easiest ways to prevent adverse environment impact, cost of food waste disposal and most importantly wastage of nutrition value of food waste.
Not only, is food wastage a grave issue in the world but is also encountered in the smallest of parts of the globe, for instance in Pantnagar. To transcend the problematic scenario, the wisest solution is to avert the food wastage and channelize the latent potential within it. Therefore, the food which is being wasted in the hostel mess, canteens, restaurants etc should be put to productive use by processing it to produce animal feed supplement. We will be dealing with the canteen staff and the mess workers to aware them of the present situation so as to gain their support. Collection tanks can be set up at several places encompassing the food joints , to prevent the food from getting sabotaged. In this way, the processed food will be sold to the stakeholders working at various levels. Primary stakeholders are the companies working in food waste management sectors, secondary stakeholders being the owners of restaurants, housing communities, cafeterias etc and tertiary stakeholders will be the animal husbandry units and local pet care centres.
