The brewing industry has a substantial amount of government regulations at both the federal and state level. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau shows that there are currently two United States Codes that brewers must be in accordance with during operations. It is required that you must have forms submitted and approved by the Tax and Trade Bureau before you are allowed to operate business that is not a brew-on-premises. The Tax and Trade Bureau also has regulations that must be followed on the advertising and labeling that applies to sealed containers. The regulations are as follows:
• It must be legible under ordinary conditions, and on a contrasting background.
• The words “GOVERNMENT WARNING” must be in capital letters and bold type. The rest of the statement may not appear in bold type.
• The maximum number of characters per inch of the warning statement is 25. All characters, including both upper and lower case, must be a minimum 2 millimeters in size.
Additionally, there is an $18 dollar excise tax per barrel of thirty-one gallons, as well as bond coverage that is required before business operations begin, retail licenses, and packaging regulations.5
