Introduction

Changi Airport complex in Singapore which is generally regarded as a global intersection point in aviation and logistics. This report discusses the Changi Airport operations with focus on the passenger process operations and sustainability concepts. An overview of the airport and its evolution over the years is prepared, followed by internal passenger operations. Sustainability is then widely discussed on how the airport has implemented programs that work within the topic. Finally, a conclusion is drawn and the future strategies for Changi over the next decade is discussed.

Overview of Changi Airport

Changi Airport connects more than 320 cities and 70 countries where it is served by more than 100 airlines in the world. Furthermore, it is the 6th busiest airport in the world and a major air hub in Asia where there are around 40,000 people working within the airport (Changi Airport Group, 2014).

Changi is one of the best airports in the world with a well-connected air hub and has received many awards for its excellent facilities and services. Changi was also ranked as the top 10 airports in the world in 2009 by Airport Council International for handling the international freight. Changi Airport has served many leading airlines and it is an important hub for Star and OneWorld alliances (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, 2015).

History & Evolution of Changi Airport

In June 1975, the government decided to replace the Paya Lebar Airport with Changi as the new airport in Singapore where it is officially declared to open in December 1981. Changi currently has three terminals and operates two runways in 2015. Changi Airport has plans in the near future to build two more terminals with three runways in order to make sure that the airport will have enough capacity to stay competitive within the aviation industry (Changi Airport Group, 2015c). Changi has been affected by global recession, but through that, the airport has managed to strengthen their operations and regulatory system by restructuring the system to fulfil the demands and become ever ready to face new challenges (Changi Airport Group, 2009).

As Changi is the primary regional hub of Singapore, the average growth rate for handling the freight has achieved 4.7% for the past 15 years and it has become a vibrant Business Aviation (BA) sector where in the first half of 2013 there are more than 3,600 BA movements (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, 2015).
