Activity 3.5: Cognitive Empathy Questionnaire
Reflection: My participation in this self-assessment reconfirms what I knew about myself; I have a high emotional empathy. My empathetic nature is what grasped my interest in pursuing my studies in psychology. The result of this self-assessment reconfirms the fact that I often try and see things from another person’s point of view. I believe it is a useful tool in order to make others aware of their own empathy level especially if they wish to improve it.
Generalization: Although the test has not increased my awareness it has shown me that the high competiveness of this decade has not affected my empathetic nature. People strive to succeed and oftentimes are preoccupied with their own needs. Scoring a 28 on the questionnaire proves that empathy will always remain one of my qualities.
Knowledge: This tool relates to chapter 3,4, and 9. In chapter 3, the authors explain how empathy decreases the attribution error. In chapter 4, the Questionnaire relates to emotional intelligence. Empathy plays a key part in emotional intelligence, which helps improve the overall efficiency of an organization. In chapter 9, empathy is described as an essential key in order to clearly communicate an individual’s point of view as well as actively listening to someone.
Application: My high empathetic nature was very useful to me in my previous employment as a program worker in a detoxification centre. Anonymous satisfaction questionnaire revealed that clients appreciated my compassion and understanding during their stay. Although empathy might sound like a simple task showing that you care can go a long way in an organizational setting.
Summary: Empathy is essential in my future career in HR. It will allow me to actively listen to individuals and to take in both sides of each situation when a problem arises. My high emotional empathy will show my coworkers and employees that I actually care for their needs and achievement.

Reflection: This self-assessment reconfirms what I knew about myself. Although I haven’t learned anything about myself, I do believe that this is a useful tool in order to learn whether a person needs improve their empathy skills.
Generalization: Scoring 29 proves my sensitivity to other’s feelings and thoughts. I believe that being sensitive to people’s needs enhances relationships, which are very important in organizational setting. I think the main reasons that friends and coworkers ask me for advice is because I don’t judge their behaviors.
