Communication theory Paper
For any organization to run smoothly and effectively it is important to have good communication skills. If one possess good technical skills or have good ideas but is lacking in communication with others it does no good. Every form of communication including no communication at all can have a substantial influence on any organization from a business standpoint. According to Mackin (2007), members’ attitudes about the organization have a huge influence on the effectiveness of teams. Employees who believe that they have support from administration or people who sit at the top of the corporate ladder will most likely produce a higher quality of work. On the flipside of this, an employee who believes he or she has been left out will not perform as well.
The terms group and team have different meanings in the workplace. A group functions and takes orders from a leader (manager or supervisor). Leaders have the authority to set rules on how things are to be done. When one violates the rules he or she has to answer to the leader. A team is a small group of people with complementary skills and abilities. Members of a group commit his or herself to a common goal and approach for which they hold each other responsible (Mackin, 2007). Team members work together. When a member does not pull his or her load, the team gives corrective criticism instead of reporting to a leader or supervisor.
According to the outcome of this research on the difference between a team and a group, Abbeville Community Health Center operates with both groups and teams. The office manager delegates specific job duties to certain employees. The employee must complete the assign tasks. When an employee fails to complete his or her job duties, he or she is spoken to by the office manager and corrective action is taken. Although there is an office manager aboard, employees have taken it upon their selves and form teams where everyone looks out for each other and help each other as much as possible. Working as team members not only accomplishes good results it also helps form lasting friendships.
