Learning Outcomes
On completing this module students should be able to:
1. Understanding and critical appraisal of strategy concepts: students can demonstrate understanding and competent use of strategic management concepts.
2. Strategic analysis: students selectively use analytical concepts and develop a well-founded strategic analysis of a company case.
3. Analysis and proposal presentation: Students synthesise their strategic analysis and present their findings to an audience in an appropriate manner.
4. Team working: Students effectively engage in collaborative learning in the context of case study analysis (or simulation game) and evaluate one another's contribution to the process.
5. Critical thinking and understanding of the strategic issues: students successfully engage in individual learning and strategic thinking by evaluating concepts, processes and models.
.2 Tutorials
Tutorial sessions are designed to assist students to comprehend and apply the theories to real life situations. During tutorials students will learn how to selectively use analytical concepts and develop a well-founded strategic analysis of a company case. Students will need to work effectively in teams and engage in collaborative learning.
For tutorials, attendance is compulsory, monitored and will be an integral part of the overall grade obtained in the module. Students are not allowed to switch between tutorials without prior permission.
4.3 Learning Techniques
Students are expected to engage in individual as well as collaborative learning. Individual learning will require, for example, the use of research and reading skills. Collaborative learning (i.e. team work) will be needed for case study analysis and tutorial presentation.
Students are required to participate in class discussion and small exercises during tutorials. The objective is to ensure that concepts are understood and can be appropriately applied.
Tutorials will provide an opportunity for students to develop problem-solving skills. Active participation is required. Students will be asked to work in teams.
Students are required to apply the theories they have learnt in lectures to real-life situations (e.g. case study analysis) and they will also be given the opportunity to reflect on their experience to foster their critical appreciation of the discipline and evaluate the evolution in their own understanding of the topic.
