1) The hypothesis that the admisson counselors are investigating is:

There is a relationship/correlation between the students high school GPA and the students Freshman GPA.

The null hypothesis would be: there are no significant relationship/correlation between the students high school GPA and the students Freshman GPA

Positive hypothesis: There is a positive correlation between a students high school GPA and their freshman GPA.

Negative hypothesis: There is a negative correlation between a students high school GPA and their freshman GPA.

2) There are no independent or dependent variable in this case, instead we use a predictor variable and a criterion variable.

3) The predictor variable represent the students high school GPA

The criterion variable represent the students Freshman GPA

4) I would recommend them to use the Pearson R statistical test to test their hypthesis.

5) Case A:

In case A there is a very strong positive correlation between the students high school GPA and their Freshman GPA, so the conclution is in support of the positive hypothesis, and states that students who have a good high school GPA will do very well in university.

In case B there is also still a strong positive correlation between the students high school GPA and their Freshman GPA, so the conclution is in support of the positive hypothesis, and states that students who have a good high school GPA will do well in university.
