Whistle blowing consists in disclosing unethical or illegal performs in the workplace. There are many controversial issues whether an employee should blow the whistle or not. Moreover one major issue regarding whistleblowing is the prominent dilemma whether this act is a breach of trust and confidentiality towards the company and employees. In accordance with employment relationship, whistle blowing is not a breach of trust and confidentiality; it is a moral initiative and it is an act of loyalty towards both corporation and other employees.
This paper analyses the moral and ethical dilemmas that whistleblowers face along with several claims from business articles that support the thesis statement. There are many legal ways that support whistleblowing, but leaving the legal side apart, still it is difficult for employees who might be aware of a fraud within the company, to make the decision to blow the whistle. While discussing whether the whistleblowing is a breach of trust and confidentiality, it is important to distinguish which is the object of trust and confidentiality; is it the company itself or are the employees. Moreover it is also important to talk separately for internal and external whistleblowing.
First I would like to make a connection between decision making, whistleblowing and Integrity. While talking about the decisions that we make, we consider our pros and cons of making that decision, and we also consider the fact whether the decision that we made was ethical or not, or how it will affect different people. Basically the decisions we make for ourselves decide whether we are an ethical person or not. While making a decision in the working environment, we should consider how that decision affects our fellow employees, and whether the decision is made in good faith, because the final end of the decisions and actions we make, is our flourishing. So the process of deciding whether to blow the whistle or not should be based on the grounds of our principles and integrity. "Integrity means wholeness, entireness or completeness" When we say a person is of integrity, we mean that there is a connection between the principles of this person and his actions. So in the case of whistle blowing, the person choosing to blow the whistle is acting on the basis of his principles and integrity. If he believes that some wrongdoing his company is making, threatens the good of the public and since the whistle blower in this case is a person of integrity, then it is his responsibility to blow the whistle and make the information public. (In this case I am assuming that the decision to blow the whistle is made on good faith and that the whistle blower has strong evidences on the misconduct that is occurring.)
