DSCI 300: Prescriptive Business Analytics: Spring 2016, Sections 06, 07

Instructor:         John D. Hanson, Ph.D.

Office:          In the Supply Chain Management Institute – Alcala West, Durango, Suite A

Phone:         619-260-7673, Feel free to leave me a message, but unless you know me to be in the office, you will get a faster response by using email.

E-mail:         hansonj@sandiego.edu  This is by far the best way to reach me.  Please help me to organize my life by starting the subject line of any e-mail with: DSCI300.  The email feature on Blackboard is also fairly reliable.

Other:        You won’t find me on Facebook or Twitter, but I am on LinkedIn.  Students are welcome to link to me there.

Text:

There is no required text for this course.  That doesn’t mean you don’t need to access external resources, but there is no need to spend a lot of money on the latest edition of a specific text.  I will provide some materials on Blackboard and a great deal more is only a web search away, including my own YouTube channel: (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB8USDd9WvcJWMXlx8nrcjg

Having a hard copy of a text as a reference is not a bad idea and there are several out there that cover pretty much the same stuff.  Go to Amazon.com and search for “Management Science” under books and you will get a list.  I like Anderson, et al as a comprehensive reference on techniques, while the books by Hillier and by Powell cover a little more of the spreadsheet modeling.  Older, cheaper editions are generally just as good, the only thing being that the screen shots of Excel may not be current.

Class Schedule:

Section 06: Tuesdays & Thursdays in Olin 127, 2:30 – 3:50

Section 07: Tuesdays & Thursdays in Olin 127, 4:00 – 5:20

Please note the scheduling of the final exams when making your end-of-semester getaway plans.  There is no flexibility in this.

Office Hours:

Tuesdays, 10:45 – 12:00 (first and second Tuesdays of month, others until 2:00)

Thursdays 10:45 – 2:00

or by appointment.  Office hours are subject to change or cancellation, so pay attention to announcements in class and on Blackboard.  The availability of one-on-one interaction with your instructor is one of the unique benefits of USD – take advantage of it!  Obviously I can’t give huge amounts of time to everyone, but I will do my best.
