Effective Communication in the Workplace
The topic of my paper is how to utilize the various methods of communication in the workplace in order to ensure that there is an understanding among all employees. The organization that I am targeting is my current employer. I am interested in this topic because on several occasions, issues have occurred because of lack of communication. I have experienced this first hand. I feel that in order to improve the communication within the organization, various methods need to implementing to ensure that there is a clear understanding. . The company that I currently work for is my muse for this paper. There is a serious lack of communication. At times, there appears to be a communication barrier between management and the operations. Ultimately, we all strive and work together to achieve a common goal, to increase and improve production within the company. Without the ability to effectively communicate, our production will suffer.
Effective communication enables leaders to lead. Effective communication occurs only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to covey. As a leader, studying the communication process is important. Communication skills, including the ability to problem solve, work in teams, and adapt to various audiences, are critical in today’s workplace. Since the most successful leaders communicate well, understanding how your communication is working and how it might work better is critical to achieving similar success.
The changes in technology have introduced many different forms of communication with others in the workplace and with the clients. Unfortunately, basic writing skills need to achieve the intended goals has gone by the wayside. It is becoming rapidly easier to let the computer do much of the work. Even though employees do not spend the same time updating their academic skills in the same manner as technology, we are increasingly finding it necessary.
With the introduction of the internet, email, fax, and voicemail, it is easy to allow the computer to do majority of the work without too much thought. Think about this; you have a message or a lengthy correspondence to send to a client or someone in the office. Next, you use spelling and grammar checker to review the paper. Without review, one click and off it goes. Think about the problems that can entail from misspelling and misunderstanding. It is easy to rely on computers, but they are not always dependable. Calculators along with basic math skills are a necessity. They should go hand in hand. The same goes for computers and writing skills. To communicate effectively you need to write and speak clearly, and technology does not always cultivate this. How many times have we used email to communicate with someone across the room?
